What are the differences between N95 masks and other face masks?

As the stock of N95 masks is critically low, residents are urged to sew face masks at home for medical community and family's protection. Then, can handmade masks be a effective way at protecting you from the coronavirus and what are the differences between N95 masks and other face masks?
As is known that coronavirus can linger in the air for up to 30 minutes and it can be transmitted from person to person through vapor (breath), coughing, sneezing, saliva and transfer over commonly touched objects. Compared with other types of surgical masks and face masks, N95 masks can create a tight seal between the respirator and your face, which helps filter at least 95% of airborne particulates.
